Use lotion to remove adhesive. Lotion is the easiest way to remove the adhesive on your skin left from the stickers that connect to the electrodes. It is also the least irritating for your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin like me.

Let the lotion sink into your skin before wiping of the adhesive with some tissue paper. Do not put on lotion while stickers are on your skin. As I said, I have very sensitive skin. I lost a couple of nights of valuable sleep because the monitor vibrates every time one of the electrodes is coming off. That brings me to the next tip. Turn off the monitor while sleeping.

Unless your doctor says otherwise, it is OK to turn the monitor off while you sleep, if it is constantly bothering you. Contact the company for extra supplies. If needed, you can always contact the company that made the monitor for extra stickers and batteries. Send back your monitor. You may even get a bill telling you that you must pay for the missing device. Ask your doctor for a copy of the recordings taken from the monitor and mail it to the company as proof that the monitor was returned.

If you experience troublesome itching, there are some things you can do that may help relieve it and prevent damage caused by scratching, including:.

Many cases of itching will get better over a short period of time. You should also visit your GP if your entire body itches and there is no obvious cause. It could be a symptom of a more serious condition.

They will also examine your skin to look for any visible symptoms. In some cases, they may take a skin scraping or a swab so it can be tested to help identify the cause of your itching. An itch is often caused by a condition affecting the skin, but it can be a sign of a more serious underlying problem.

In women, itching can sometimes be caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy and after the menopause. Itching often affects pregnant women and usually disappears after the birth. A number of skin conditions can develop during pregnancy and cause itchy skin. They include:. Seek advice from your midwife or GP if you have itching or any unusual skin rashes during your pregnancy. Then, she sticks a barrier pad onto her clean skin remember to cut a small hole in the pad; sticking the sensor through the pad can lead to inaccurate readings before inserting her CGM sensor. Without the pad, her skin would erupt into a blistering rash. Figuring out the main components that cause allergy or irritation is difficult, says Rajani Katta, MD, a skin irritation specialist and clinical assistant professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Most people who experience an adhesive reaction have an irritation—only a few people out of a hundred will have a true allergy to adhesive chemicals, says Joseph Fowler, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Bruce Brod, MD, president of the American Contact Dermatitis Society and clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania, says allergic reactions often spread beyond the skin directly underneath the adhesive patch.

Irritation, on the other hand, tends to look chafed, scaly, or dry exactly where the adhesive sits on the skin.

Both types of reactions can be red, flaky, itchy, and painful, though usually swelling and blisters indicate an allergic reaction, which will likely get worse with each exposure. If an allergy is suspected, your provider can recommend a skin-care regimen and products for relief, or a specialist for patch testing. Acrylate is a simple chemical that creates stickiness in many adhesives, says Fowler.

Different types of acrylates are used in patch adhesives, infusion sets, and glue in pumps and CGMs. Colophony is a natural adhesive that comes from rosin, which is derived from the sap of pine and spruce trees. It is used as the sticky ingredient in some adhesive wipes, such as Skin Tac, says Katta. Some people swipe one of these wipes over their insertion site but not where the sensor needle pierces the skin before sticking on a sensor or infusion set.

Using such adhesive wipes may help the sensor or set stay in place, but because colophony can cause allergic reactions, skin wipes must be used with caution. This liquid adhesive is also used to help keep infusion sets and CGM sensors in place: Spray it on the skin avoiding the spot where the sensor will insertlet it dry, then affix the set or sensor.

If you have sensitive skin, it may be best to avoid this adhesive. Katta says mastisol is a common cause of allergic reactions.

Whether your skin reaction is from irritation or allergy, check out these expert recommendations to help treat your rash so you can continue to wear your device. One way to prevent irritation from adhesives is to adopt a good skin care routine. Try this: Once you step out of the shower, pat your skin with a towel you want skin a little damp and apply moisturizer.

Skip harsh soaps and long, hot showers, which can damage the skin barrier. Instead, take a to minute shower in lukewarm water. When something stays in contact with the skin for long enough, it can cause irritation—whether you have sensitive skin or not.

What can we do to stop the itchy rash caused from the adhesive of the patch?

The first thing he recommends for people with irritation is to alternate from one side of the body to the other with each insertion. Sometimes skin care products can get stuck under the adhesive, causing irritation or allergy, says Katta. Steer clear of products with fragrance additives, formaldehyde preservatives such as quaternium 15 and bronopoland methylisothiazolinone, all of which can be extra irritating for people with sensitive skin.

That can take the form of a barrier wipe or physical barrier, such as an adhesive pad. But you have to be careful not to get the spray or wipe on the area where your CGM sensor needle pierces the skin—the sensor may be sensitive to the chemicals, which can affect your reading.

Do ensure your CGM sensor or infusion set needle or cannula is clear of any physical barrier. One way to ensure this is to cut a small hole in the dressing for the sensor, cannula, or needle to fit through.

While barriers give many people relief, someone with a severe allergy may not be able to go this route. Corticosteroid creams and sprays are useful to clear up a rash, but they will only treat the symptoms. Trapped beneath an adhesive, a steroid cream may penetrate more deeply, increasing the risk for thinning of the skin, she says. While people rarely stop using a device due to a rash, Head says she has seen it happen.

The trick? Ask your diabetes educator for a list of all the possible product and treatment options, then try each one until you find something that holds your device in place—without a skin reaction. Such products themselves can cause allergic reactions and irritation, however, so avoid them if your skin is sensitive, says Rajani Katta, MD, a skin irritation specialist and clinical assistant professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Among them:. Wipes and dressings: Barrier wipes add a layer of clear film to your skin that can stop irritating adhesives from causing a reaction.Page of 40 Go. Quick Links. But figuring out why your itchy skin medically known as chronic pruritus is feeling unbearable in the first place is step one to treating the problem, says Alix J. This can simply come down to genetics, colder weather, or even getting older.

If your itchy skin also comes with a gnarly flush of red, scaly skin and the need to scratch is even worse at night, you could be dealing with a chronic skin condition such as psoriasis which is linked to inflammation caused by your immune system or eczema also known as atopic dermatitis. Fortunately, there are a number of treatments available for both conditions, including OTC productsprescription topical creams, oral or injectable medications, and phototherapy, which targets irritated skin with UV rays, says Dr.

Kanchanapoomi Levin. If you bought ultra-fragrant fabric softener, swam too close to baby jellies, or just recently developed an allergy yep, that happensitching can crop up—it is a common response to allergens. Chronic itchy skin and hives could be a sign of a more serious issue, like infections or illnesses. Hormonal fluctuations can have potent effects, including relentlessly itchy skin, says Dr.

When any type of bug bites you, it has the potential to inject foreign substances into your body, which your immune system will attack with histamine, a compound that spurs the itch. Then, get rid of the source if necessary, apply antiseptic creams or lotions, and take an OTC antihistamine like Benadrylsuggests Melanie Grossman, MDa New York City-based board-certified dermatologist. Just a guess. I feel for you. I had adhesive sensitivities and even after a 24 hour Holter I feel rather irritated. After a 48 hour monitor, my skin was peeling and scabbing. I just kept thinking of how important the test was and used that as my mantra lol.Sincethe year-old pediatric anesthesiologist has had ventricular tachycardia, causing the lower chamber of his heart to beat abnormally fast.

He's one of millions of Americans with abnormal heart rhythm, or cardiac arrhythmia. The most common form, called atrial fibrillation, affects as many as 6 million people in the U.

There are therapies that can treat abnormal heart rhythm, but first doctors need good ways to monitor it. For decades, cardiologists have used devices known as Holter monitors, which are about the size of a deck of cards.

They're typically worn for two days, with multiple electrodes connected to the chest and torso. It's difficult to wear under your clothing, it's difficult to work, and it's difficult to travel. A three-inch patch worn continuously for two weeks, the Zio is set to displace Holter monitors almost completely, said JPMorgan analyst Mike Weinstein.

The technology appears so simple that cardiologist Edward Gerstenfeld said he was baffled it hadn't come along earlier. The patch — which encases a chip and two electrodes — also generates huge amounts of data: 30, pages of information on a patient's heartbeat, which iRhythm analyzes and distills into a page report for physicians. He has recommended buying iRhythm stock since November, after the company's October initial public offering, led by Weinstein's firm, JPMorgan.

The company's database grows with each new patient, and will get more useful with each new addition, said iRhythm CEO Kevin King. The higher price can occasionally cause trouble with insurance reimbursement, though Gerstenfeld estimated about 80 percent of insurance companies cover the patch.

More data on its usefulness will help, Weinstein said. The company did a study comparing data generated by the Zio to that from Holter monitors in people with atrial fibrillation, and found that physicians changed their medical decisions 28 percent of the time because of the Zio report, according to King.

The market opportunity, according to Weinstein, is huge: there are more than 4 million cardiac diagnostic tests done in the U. Sarah, despite the mysteriousness of his heartbeat, said his condition is well-managed.

In addition to having used the Zio, he has an implanted cardiac monitor made by Medtronic designed to capture infrequent episodes like his. And he says he'd never go back to a Holter monitor. I forgot it was on during multiple occasions, and it was better than any other cardiac monitoring experience that I ever had.
